WISTA Field 10"x8" Camera for sale
I love my 5"x4" Wista Field and this is its 'big brother the 10"x8". Large Wistas are very rare: - I'm not sure why but they seldom seem to come up for sale. - maybe their owners just won't part with them! It's a lovely thing but I've got other less precious cameras I use instead so this is for sale.
Specifications:
Takes standard Fidelity /Toyo etc. 10"x8" double darkslide film holders. Spring loaded ground glass frame holds them in place. Will also take standard 5"x4" holders via the test back (see below)
Lens board size is the same as SInar/Horseman: 138mm square.
Weight without lens or film holder is 4.73kg
Maximum bellows extension (lens board to film plane is approx. 570mm
Minimum is approx. 115mm
Movements: Front swing and tilt, rise and fall. Rear swing and tilt. Front AND rear focusing adjustment.
Ground glass has an engraved 10mm grid (see picture)
Ground glass /film holder back is removed and rotated for portrait /landscape formats
Aluminium baseplate has both 1/4" and 3/8" standard threaded tripod sockets.
Condition:
This is an ex-professional studio /location camera so it has signs of extensive use, but it's been well cared for.
Everything works as it should, smoothly and without 'slop' or sticking. The catches and locks on knobs etx. all work properly.
Some marks to the lacquer on the brass fittings (see pictures) and minor bumps and scratches to the woodwork, mostly on the base. The baseplate has been repainted.
Spirit level plate on the top is (I think?) non-standard but a useful addition.
The bellows are good: Clean and light-tight. There are a few slight creases, the most prominent is near the front right hand side (see pictures) but nothing serious.
5"x4" Test Back:
This is an oddity: Clearly home-made but using Wista parts, notably the back from a 5"x4" Wista Field. A piece of plywood (stained and varnished to match the camera) fits in place of the usual back and allows a test shot of one quarter of the image area to be recorded. - Most likely used with a Polaroid back (how we used to test in the 1980s!) or with film (again, I remember doing this as akin to a 'clip test' for E6 back in the old days:-)
Aluminium Case:
Bespoke Aluminium case with slots for the camera and test back. Included in the sale price of course.
A wonderful, eminently useable camera with an interesting history.
I'm more than happy for you to come and inspect it in person (LIss, Hampshire).
